Donna Karan sells more than $150 million per year of fashion. Donna Faske was born in New York in 1948. In 1962 she dropped out of school and started selling clothes at a neighbourhood boutique. In 1966 she enrolled into the prestigious Parsons School of Design. She married Mark Karan and had a daughter, Gabrielle. She divorced in 1983 and remarried her childhood sweetheart, sculptor Stephan Weiss.

In 1968 she took up a job with designer Ann Klein but was soon fired. She worked for Cappalli for 18 months and in 1970 returned to Anne Klein who later in 1974 died of cancer. Donna Karan completed Anna Klein's unfinished works. She and Dell Olio made Anne Klein into one of the USA'S biggest and most profitable designer sports wear labels. She collected 3 Coty Awards (The Americans fashion designers version of the Oscar) during the time she worked with Anne Klein.

In 1985 she started her own label "The Donna Karan Collection". In 1988 DKNY was born. Less than a year after starting her own company Donna Karan was awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America Award for her contribution to American fashion, known as the "Gold Thimble". Donna Karan is still head of the design team for the Donna Karan Collection and she overseas a young team who continually inspire her.
